In May 2015, I became the Research Director at the Tow Center for Digital Journalism, at the Graduate School for Journalism at Columbia University. I am also the co-founder of Eyewitness Media Hub, which is a member of the First Draft Coalition.

My research and teaching focuses on eyewitness media (otherwise known as UGC), how can journalists find it, verify it, and use it ethically.

For the previous six years I worked with newsrooms and humanitarian organisations around the world, providing training and consultancy on digital transformation. I was responsible for the design and development of the social media training programme at the BBC, one that has been taken up by over 3000 staff, from senior managers, journalists, content producers, PR and Communications staff.

I was previously an academic at Cardiff University after completing my PhD in Communications at the Annenberg School for Communications at the University of Pennsylvania.

  1. Hi Claire,
I stumbled on this article while doing some research on topical developments on journalism and social media. I am a former journalist and editor in Kenya, and currently taking up a part time university teaching job and hoping to do a PHD in media studies and do freelance consultancy work shortly.
I agree with you that there is a disconnect between training institutions and industry. There is a lot of research going on in Nairobi but the reports just remain findings and the recommendations merely academic. I would like you to mentor me on how to create an impact. Thank you. Gladys.

  2. Claire,
this is the resonance map of this page of your blog.

A resonance map could be used to stream content that ‘resonates’ with your map to you quickly. If your needs change then the resonance would also change thereby adjusting the content that you see accordingly. Not categories required.

Chaning resonance is dead simple, change the content in the file that we use to assess your resonance–in this case it was this page.

Here is the map … http://tinyurl.com/bbc-claire
